Ngonyama Camper Rentals Pty Ltd was formed a couple of years ago when we identified the need for a genuine off-road caravan rental company.


The activities of Ngonyama Camper Rentals Pty Ltd has expanded dramatically in the last 6 years. Where we began as a off-road caravan and trailer rental company only, it has grown and evolved into a company running a safari club, an institution of information, a service division looking after the service and maintenance of off-road caravans and trailers in addition to the rental of off-road caravans, trailers and camping gear. The company has also obtained the dealership for the Conqueror off-road caravan and trailers.

The Company provides major input into the research and development for various off-road caravan and trailer manufacturers in respect of their products. The company also develops its own solar power battery systems for electrical needs whilst on safari. 

In 2007 the Company has acquired a major interest in a manufacturing company which produces the B’rakhah off-road caravans and trailers. In 2008 it is expected to see the company merging or co-ordinating its activities to streamline it into one commercial unit.

The Company is run by Loftus Viljoen.  Loftus Viljoen is an attorney by profession specializing in commercial, environmental, property and litigious matters since 1975. He loves the wide outdoors and is a keen a photographer and many of these are photographs are published on this web site as well as various magazines. He has done many safaris all over Southern Africa. He is also a certified and qualified advanced scuba diver with deep diving as a specialty. Loftus loves to explore new places, new destinations and takes a keen interest in and the environment as well as the fauna and flora of the areas he visits. He has done various 4x4 courses from rocky terrain bushes to sand dunes. As a kid he grew up in a butchery environment and today he makes the tastiest venison salami, sausages, sosaties, smoked cheese grillers and generally just loves cooking.

It seems an unlikely venture for an attorney to start an off-road caravan rental company, but for this Pretoria-based attorney, it happened quite by chance. Doing the Eco 4x4 Challenge a couple of years ago Loftus was approached by a couple of friends who wanted to join him on a safari to Botswana and Zambia, some of the single ladies was apprehensive about sleeping in a tent (be it on terra firma or a rooftop). They also did not relish the prospect of pitching a tent after a long day’s drive and packing everything up the next morning. Thus began the search for rental off-road caravans, but, alas none were to be found. The idea of a fleet of rental 4x4 caravans was conceived in November 2003.

Ngonyama Camper Rentals aim: to offer travellers to off-road destinations the opportunity of camping in comfort with the minimum of fuss and more time to enjoy the trip. The caravans had to be equipped with everything needed for an off-road trip/safari. Every item had to be classy, durable, practical and lightweight.

Before the Company started off, they had to do a thorough market research, not only on who or where their competitors were, but also the Tourism figures, the figures of new 4x4’s sold and various other factors.

Our vision: Despite the Beach Ban, the growth in the 4x4 market over the last decade has been phenomenal: All indications are that this market will keep on expanding. The person who buys a 4x4 today, does not buy it just to park it on the pavement. When buying a 4x4 that person has something in mind, whether it is the feeling of safety or security or whether deep inside him/her is that feeling to Experience Africa.

Ngonyama Camper Rentals wants people to use their 4x4 vehicle responsibly and to tread lightly wherever they go. Especially the impact their 4x4 vehicles make on the terrain and the environment wherever they go. We want people to be aware that a road between point A and point B belongs to somebody – whether it is a public or private road doesn’t matter. It belongs to the people of that country or a tribe or an organization or a private person. Use that road responsibly and have respect for other users, the land and environment. Research has shown that many South Africans and tourists from abroad do not always want to Experience Africa in expensive and luxurious lodges and hotels. People want to experience the real bush and what better way to do it, than by showing their class and style and to rent a 4x4 vehicle and off-road caravan/trailer from us. Busy executives or professionals do not always have the time to plan their own safaris and this is where Ngonyama Camper Rentals can assist by giving them a service of just hook and tow.
